Actors turning into politicians are nothing new in Tamil Nadu. The state has a history of Makkal Thilagam MGR to the present CM Jayalalithaa carving a niche in both cinema and politics. The latest to the join the list is comedian Karunaas who turned an MLA with the recent Assembly election. "There isn't much difference between an artiste and a politician. The former entertains people, while the latter serves them — at the end of the day, what matters is winning people's hearts," says Karunaas, who is quite confident of doing both — serving and entertaining people. In a chat Karunaas gets candid about his constituency, enjoying a respectable position in the Nadigar Sangam, upcoming projects.
"When I was young, I dreamt of being an artiste, and my wish came true. But I never thought seriously of becoming a politician. My foray into politics was unexpected. However, my family somehow knew that I had a career in politics, as I have been helping the downtrodden through my NGOs for more than seven years. Many a times, I tried my best to get free seats for students in school who deserve it."
"As I said, I don't find any difference between acting and politics. But what upsets me is the fact that I am not able to spend enough time with my family. I'm badly missing my kids and wife. Initially, I could cope with it, but now I am having a tough time. But I know that this is how my life is going to be from now on. We need to sacrifice our personal lives, when we are into public service. That's how it works. I am also shooting for a few films, and hence, I have more responsibilities. I have a very hectic schedule, as I have to decide many matters in my constituency, Thiruvadanai, and thank people who have elected me. In fact, the recognition which I enjoy now is only because of Amma (CM Jayalalithaa)"
